Media Ethics
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VNV__mV38s
Above is a link to a music video which, to my own opinion and discretion is what is wrong with the media. This video is just one example of the general things that plague the media and to me, is slowly turning it into a business. I don't think this was the initial vision for media in any shape or form.
The central point of the song is that it is about homosexual people trying to find their place in the world. There is nothing wrong with that. I am all for support and let them be them, they are human beings after all. The artist, a member of the homosexual community himself, has freedom of speech and all rights to express himself. The problem here is the media. I don't mean to insult anyone; this is a media blog that will talk about what is wrong or good in the media and analyze it accordingly. I will not hold myself about talking about an issue it it means I will 'lose readers; lose viewers.'
That being said, that is exactly what is wrong with this particular song and the platform that promotes it. Let's start with the ethics of the video, or lack thereof. The song I do not mind. It is the video that is the problem. It has a lot of homosexual propaganda and graphic representation of it as well. Homosexuality as a whole is immoral. Even Troye Sivan, the artist, recognized this in his own lyrics, "...how do we get to heaven."
We must also speak of the platform as well. Along with the music video, YouTube is at fault as well. Not only is YouTube a kid friendly media but the video already has over 15 million views and who knows how many more in other videos across the platform. One can only wonder about the demographics for that video.
Both YouTube and the video are unethical in promoting this kind of media. But, I do understand. They have to publish it. They have to propagate it and promote it and in my opinion it is not for support. It is just there for what will make more money.
As everything I have learned in my communications class converges, I will say that the audiences for this song and many others of the kind on the internet are at risk. The priming is there. The video has entered your head and the song is catchy and you wouldn't mind listening to it. The creators and facilitators of the video have allowed the audiences to only receive the "positive" effects of the act and this brings us to the framing of the video. The people in the video look happy and for a viewer that doesn't know better s/he would want that same happiness and he will think that if he lead that lifestyle he will achieve that. This results in the cultivation of that idea and the adoption of those values if audiences are weak minded and don't understand how unethical the media can be, especially when they are inconsiderate for the kids.
The elements of news, can also apply to this virus in media and YouTube for this case, or the music video to be more specific. As previously said, media has become a business; whatever will make the most views, the most money, get the most attention. It will aim at global attention rather than proximity but for the same reason; to get the most attention. Both target the distance a medium must travel to be relevant and YouTube capitalized on this with this video as the issue there is a global matter. It is an up to date issue; the timing is right. The prominence is there; a famous singer as the voice for the people. There is the conflict of the matter; how can people of that lifestyle attain heaven? It may not be a novelty as many media outlets are CAPITALizing, $pun intended$, on these matters, but any form of media that supports the LGBTQ community is welcome to them and to those all around the globe who support. This brings us to the strategy of media platforms and content to appeal to the interests of people and this video and platform understand this.
This is unethical in my opinion. Graphic representations of homosexuality in media platforms are unacceptable in my opinion. No disrespect intended but if that is your lifestyle, speak out, sing, but do not endorse or propagate ideas or values onto other people. Do not spread the idea that it is okay just for the views or for the money or for the attention. It is not only YouTube. It is every media that speak of the conflict, the interesting matters, not because they care but for the attention. I do not think this is right.
That is it. There is not much more I can say. I hope you guys enjoyed the analysis and my views on the matter. Hope you are still here for the next weekly blog.

Correct me if I am wrong but you are saying that you do not agree with the marketing or profiting the media makes of realities such as LGBT issues?
ReplyDeleteI believe it is immoral and that media should not propagate it graphically.. Sure they can make songs or other media but they are not to propagate and encourage it.. Settle it within theirselves...
